St. John’s Co-Cathedral – at a cost (entrance fee for a normal visitor is €6, however a discounted rate of €4.50 since it is a big group) This splendid church was built between 1573 and 1577 during the reign of Gran Master Jean de la Cassiere. A baroque work of art in its architecture and sculptures, this Church boasts some of the most beautiful works of art by Mattia Preti and Caravaggio himself. The Auberge de Provence, built in 1575, occupies a long section of Republic Street. Its facade is plain but very attractive with its characteristics quoins and a large columned doorway. Today, the building is the seat of the National Museum of Archaeology. - This small palazzo, built in 1850, is a window to Maltese domestic culture of yesteryear. The costumes collection displays a variety of period ball and wedding gowns, uniforms and court dresses. Two Second World War bomb shelters are situated below the Palazzo. The public bomb shelter, inside a large mediaeval well, was used to celebrate mass on Sundays. The private bomb shelter was excavated for the exclusive use of the residents of Casa Rocca.
Grand Masters Palace A grand and beautiful building, it is today the seat of the President and Parliament of the Republic of Malta. The Armory housed in two halls of the Magisterial Palace and contains some fine examples of mediaeval amour and weapons used by the Knights of St. John and their adversaries.
Valletta Waterfront The Valletta Waterfront Project is aimed at regenerating the Grand Harbour waterfront into a cruise and ferry passenger terminal which stretches about one kilometre along Pinto Wharf on the northern shore of the harbour. The next phase involves the re-excavation and restoration of the original seawalls built by the Knights of St. John and the creation of a water plaza in between the warehouses and the existing quay. The plans also include the creation of new transport links from the harbour using water taxis/buses and a cable car system. The port services available include bunkering, emergency ship repair facilities, chandelling and other husbandry services, on a 24-hour, 365 days a year basis. This will give the island a new state-of-the art facility that fits sympathetically into the unspoilt historic setting of the walled city of Valletta. Malta is steeped in history and what better way to sample the flavour of this unique land than to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of this astounding presentation. See the 'experience' unfold on the giant screen as sensational photography and a gripping commentary bring Malta's history to life - from the mysteries of the Stone Age temples to the coming of the Romans and Arabs; the rule of the Knights to indomitable wartime spirit that captured the imagination of the world.
